I didn't want the apology, I only wanted to help an ally, and I hardly wanted war to begin. As for Austria and Serbia: Austria took a very reasonable ultimatum upon Serbia due to what had happened in order to maintain peace and avoid war. Serbia complied to everything except one, which was the investigation into what had happened the day of the shooting, with Austrian officers so to assist in the cause. When Serbia outright rejected such a reasonable offer, Austria was completely outraged. The whole mess would have been extinguished then and there if Serbia had complied to such a simple request.

See, with this solution we lack all diplomacy. Diplomacy that separates a world power from a rebel state. We can't "kick their asses", as you say, right from the start because that makes us look like savage fools who have made absolutely no attempt to reconcile and put the porblem behind us, and ignoring the problem is out of the question because a man was shamelessly murdered. I'm not sure what sort of world you grew up in, but murder without military cause or legitimate error is not acceptable in any society I can think of off the top of my head. Some form of justification has to be presented in order for us to begin kicking ass and taking names. or so my brother has described it.
