I didn't want the apology, I only wanted to help an ally, and I hardly wanted war to begin. As for Austria and Serbia: Austria took a very reasonable ultimatum upon Serbia due to what had happened in order to maintain peace and avoid war. Serbia complied to everything except one, which was the investigation into what had happened the day of the shooting, with Austrian officers so to assist in the cause. When Serbia outright rejected such a reasonable offer, Austria was completely outraged. The whole mess would have been extinguished then and there if Serbia had complied to such a simple request.
